About Tesco Automation
Tesco Automation is a leading system integrator and consultant specializing in substation and distribution automation, with deep expertise in IEC 61850 digital substation technologies. We deliver turnkey solutions, multi-vendor integration, protection & control systems, and hands-on training across the globe. Our focus on open, interoperable, and future-ready grid modernization helps utilities, data centers, and industrial clients achieve reliable, high-performance power systems.
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced IEC 61850 Protection Engineer to join our team in designing, configuring, testing, and commissioning advanced protection and control schemes for digital substations. In this role, you will leverage IEC 61850 (including GOOSE, MMS, and Sampled Values) to develop robust, multi-vendor protection architectures that enhance reliability, reduce wiring, and support modern grid requirements. You will work on exciting projects involving process bus, station bus, and virtualized protection solutions while collaborating with a passionate team of automation experts.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop protection schemes for high-voltage (HV/EHV) and medium-voltage substations using IEC 61850-compliant Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).
- Configure and implement IEC 61850 communication protocols, including GOOSE messaging for high-speed tripping, MMS for supervisory control, and Sampled Values (IEC 61850-9-2) for process bus applications.
- Develop Substation Configuration Description (SCD) files, ICD files, and system architecture designs using tools such as PCM600, DIGSI, or vendor-specific IEC 61850 engineering software.
- Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning of protection relays, merging units, and bay controllers in multi-vendor environments.
- Troubleshoot and optimize Ethernet-based substation networks, including VLAN configuration, network redundancy (e.g., PRP/HSR), and cybersecurity considerations for protection applications.
- Support project deliverables including protection philosophies, technical specifications, test procedures, and as-built documentation.
- Collaborate with project managers, field technicians, and clients to deliver turnkey substation automation solutions.
- Participate in IEC 61850 training delivery and knowledge-sharing initiatives as part of Tesco’s 61850 University program.
- Travel primarily within North America to support site visits, commissioning, and client projects as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
Experience:
- 5+ years of progressive experience in power system protection and control, with a strong focus on IEC 61850 applications in substations.
Technical Expertise:
- In-depth knowledge of IEC 61850 standards, including data modeling, SCL files, GOOSE, MMS, and SV.
- Hands-on experience with protection relays from major vendors (e.g., SEL, Siemens, ABB, Hitachi GE, Schneider).
- Proficiency in protection scheme design for transmission, distribution, transformer, bus, and feeder applications.
- Experience with relay test sets (e.g., Omicron, Doble) and functional testing of IEC 61850-based schemes.
- Familiarity with substation network design, Ethernet switches, and PTP clocks.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with process bus architectures and merging units (IEC 61869).
- Prior involvement in digital substation projects or virtualized protection concepts.
Other Requirements:
- Eligible to work in North America (U.S. or Canada citizenship or permanent residency preferred).
- Willingness to travel (estimated 20-40%, mostly within North America).
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is an asset.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
- Opportunity to work on cutting-edge IEC 61850 and digital substation projects with industry leaders.
- Professional development through hands-on training, conference participation, and contribution to Tesco’s global IEC 61850 initiatives.
- Collaborative, innovative work environment with a focus on work-life balance and remote flexibility.
