IEC 61850 University Expands the Mobile Digital Substation: Distributed, Centralized and Virtualized Protection in One Lab
Tesco is excited to introduce the latest build of IEC 61850 University’s Mobile Digital Substation (MDS)! The MDS has always given engineers hands-on experience with virtualized protection (VPAC), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing and precision time synchronization. This build goes further: engineers can now compare three generations of protection on the same substation.
Three Generations of Protection, One Substation
The MDS models a 330/110 kV substation with a transformer, a 110 kV bus and three feeders. Every zone is fed by IEC 61869 merging units, and the same Sampled Values serve:
- Distributed Protection (Gen 3) with Dedicated IEDs per Zone
- Centralized Protection (Gen 3.5) on a Siemens 7SX85
- Virtualized Protection (Gen 4) with the ABB SSC600 on a Crystal Server
What Else Is New
- Low-Power Instrument Transformers (LPITs) on Both Sides of the Transformer
- Power Quality Profile Sampled Values with a PQ Meter/DFR
- Bus Protection (87B) Using Sampled Values from Four Merging Units
- Protection and Merging Units from Siemens, GE, Hitachi, Schneider Electric, ABB and SEL
VPAC, HIL testing with real-time simulators, and redundant PTP grandmaster clocks on the IEC 61850-9-3 power utility profile all remain part of the platform.
Already in the Field
We put the new MDS to work right away at our October public course in Pomona, California, co-hosted by Southern California Edison.
For upcoming public courses, visit IEC 61850 University, or connect with our team about bringing the MDS to your site for private training.
