We had the pleasure of presenting Tesco’s paper on “The Standardization of the HMI Application: From Concept, To Reality, To Standards” at this year’s PACWorld International Conference in Slovenia. This paper proposes to extend IEC 61850 to include the HMI application, which is known to be on of the most engineering intensive applications within the substations. It was well received by the attendees and users clearly see the value of having this application standardized under IEC 61850!

Tesco is pleased to announce that we were one of three successful proposals that were awarded by the Standards Council of Canada’s  CIIP Projecct (Canadian Innovative Initiative Pilot Project). This project is being managed by the Standards Council of Canada, who are providing all levels of support and guidance to ensure Canada is successful in our proposal to create a new IEC International Standard for substation HMI applications. It is a privilege and an honor to be one of the three successful pilot projects, and although the project is just ramping up, it has been a great experience working with the Standards Council of Canada.

This new proposed International Standard defines the abstract data models required to facilitate the information exchange between IEC 61850 IEDs and HMI applications. It models the common components found within HMI applications, which are to be incorporated under the IEC 61850-7-4XX namespace. These components include but are not limited to the single line diagrams; network topologies; toolbars; static/dynamic text; dynamic bus coloring; alarms and annunciations; user dialogue displays; static and dynamic coloring schemes; menus and navigation bars; etc.  It will describe the basic principles that need to be considered when building the HMI application, and specify how the HMI’s graphical objects are to be declared in XML using a standardized data model. This International Standard is aligned with the fundamental concepts defined within IEC 61850, and builds upon the basic communication structures already defined in IEC 61850-7-4. It will provide high-level direction in terms of how best to bind the HMI graphical objects with the IEC 61850 data attributes using the configuration description language defined in IEC 61850-6.

A similar paper on the HMI will be presented at the PACWorld Americas Conference in Raleigh, North Carolina from August 30 to September 1st, 2016. We’ll also be presenting a paper on Hybrid IEC 61850 Systems – Engineering an Ed.1 and Ed.2 System. We look forward to seeing you in Raleigh!
