Eric Xu is a Principal Protection and Automation Engineer based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, with over 14 years of expertise in Real-Time Digital Simulations and testing of IEC 61850 based PAC schemes. His professional journey is marked by an extensive background in control hardware-in-the-loop simulation development and applications.

Prior to his role at Tesco, Eric held pivotal positions at RTDS Technologies, progressing from Simulation Engineer to Lead Engineer, Lead Applications Engineer, and ultimately, Principal Engineer within the Protection and Automation group that oversaw the development and training of RTDS’s IEC 61850 interface. His responsibilities encompassed the development of power system and control models, advanced protective relay models, and network communication-related models such as IEC 61850, DNP3, and IEC 60870-5-104. Eric’s notable contributions also include the design of application cases addressing the protection and control of power systems with substantial Inverter-Based Resource penetration. He initiated the creation of the first in-house training course focused on the applications of protection and automation, showcasing his commitment to knowledge dissemination.

As a key member of the Tesco’s IEC 61850 Systems Integration & Testing team, Eric plays a pivotal role in delivering daily customer support, conducting on-site commissioning, and providing training to clients worldwide.

Eric holds a Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Design Engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi’an, China, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, MB. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Manitoba and holds senior membership status in the IEEE. Additionally, Eric contributes his expertise to the field by actively participating as a member of IEC Technical Committee 57 Working Group 10, focusing on the development of communication standards for substations – specifically, IEC 61850.
